Using newly found archival footage and remarkable eyewitness accounts from Polish survivors, Battle for Warsaw tells the heroic and tragic story of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising in which nearly a quarter of a million Christian Poles lost their lives. Outnumbered by more than 3 to 1 and fighting with only homemade or captured weapons, the Christian citizens of Warsaw (including members of Poland's underground Home Army) held out against German panzer divisions for over two months, hoping to liberate their capital for themselves before the nearby Russian troops arrived. Joseph Stalin chose to ignore the requests for help from the beseiged Poles, holding his Soviet troops back and allowing the Germans to wipe out the non-Communist Poles before he unleashed his own troops on them. After the Germans brutally ended the Polish Uprising, they destroyed over 80 percent of Warsaw, but after the war the Poles painstakingly rebuilt their beloved capital almost exactly as it was before World War II.
